So, the WordPress Daily Prompt asks: Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?

And you know what? I’m gonna say it. I’m gonna be bold. I’m gonna be a little self-centered and egotistical for a moment.

My own book’s world. Specifically, the world of my debut novel, Wonderment Within Weirdness.

Yeah, I said it. 🤣

Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea, I’m not saying this because I think my book is the greatest piece of literature ever written. Nor am I saying it just to promote my work. Okay, maybe the promotion part is a little bit true. I’m an independent author. Let me have this one!

But seriously, based on the events of the first novel alone, I genuinely think living in this world would be an absolutely INSANE experience.

And I mean that in the worst possible way.

Imagine Being an Ordinary Person in This World

One of the things I find interesting about my debut novel is that the protagonist, James, isn’t exactly some all-powerful being who has everything figured out. He’s just an ordinary dude who finds himself caught up in something far bigger than himself.

And what is that something?

Oh, you know, just a multiversal threat that puts the ENTIRE MULTIVERSE at risk.

No big deal, right?

Imagine waking up one morning, going about your day, thinking about what you’re going to eat for dinner, what bills you need to pay, or whatever ordinary people worry about.

Meanwhile, somewhere out there, the fate of the entire multiverse is hanging in the balance.

And the people trying to stop it? They’re not exactly walking into an easy victory.

The Underdogs Are In for One Hell of a Fight

Now, here’s where things get even crazier.

James isn’t facing this threat alone. He’s got a team alongside him. And you’d think having a team would make things a little easier, right?

Well, not necessarily.

Because the threat they’re facing has a team of its own. And this opposing team is POWERFUL.

Like, seriously powerful.

Meanwhile, James and his allies are essentially the underdogs. The odds are stacked against them, and they’re facing an enemy that makes the whole situation look downright terrifying.

And we’re talking about a threat to the entire multiverse here!

I don’t know about you, but if I lived in a world where the survival of EVERYTHING depended on a group of underdogs taking on an incredibly powerful opposing team, I’d be a little concerned.

Actually, scratch that. I’d be VERY concerned.

I’d probably be sitting at home thinking, “Well, this is it. This is how it ends. Hope everyone had a good run.”

And the worst part? I’m not even one of the people fighting the threat. I’m just some random person living in this multiverse, hoping that the folks trying to save it know what they’re doing.

Talk about stressful!

And This Is Just the First Book!

Here’s the thing: I’m specifically talking about the events and circumstances of my first novel, Wonderment Within Weirdness. I’m not even getting into the other possibilities I’ve planned for the larger series.

I’m keeping this discussion focused on the first book because I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone who might want to read it.

But even with that limitation, I think there’s plenty of reason to argue that this would be an absolutely wild world to live in.

Think about it. You’re living in a multiverse where an ordinary dude and his team have to confront a threat capable of endangering the entire thing, and they’re going up against a powerful enemy team with the odds heavily against them.

That’s not exactly the kind of universe where I’d feel comfortable making long-term plans.

Sure, exploring a multiverse sounds fascinating. The idea of different worlds, different possibilities, and realities beyond our own is incredibly cool.

But there’s a BIG difference between exploring a multiverse as a reader and actually having to live in one where the stakes are this high.

As a reader? Sign me up!

As an actual resident of that multiverse? Yeah, I’m gonna have to pass.

So, Is My Own Book’s World the Worst Place to Live?

Maybe. Maybe not. There are plenty of fictional worlds that would be absolutely miserable to inhabit.

But for the purposes of this prompt, I’m going with Wonderment Within Weirdness.

And honestly, I think there’s something amusing about an author looking at the world they’ve created and basically saying, “Yeah, no. I wouldn’t want to live there either.”

I created this world, and even I’m looking at the circumstances surrounding James and his team and thinking that the average person living there probably has a LOT to worry about.

So, there you have it. My answer to the WordPress Daily Prompt!

Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in? My answer is my own debut novel, Wonderment Within Weirdness.

Because apparently, when given the opportunity to choose any fictional world to complain about, I chose the one I created myself.

I guess that says something about me as an author. 😂

Orange on gray is a bit taxing on my 55 year old eyes.

Assuming you are talking mainstream well known literary worlds, the one that immediately comes to mind is Arakis (Dune).

    Water is life. (Not spice).

As we in the desert southwest can attest, wars will be fought over this most basic and precious resource.

Arakis is starkly unforgiving. The Fremen have the upmost respect and reverence for this precious liquid that without which, life will wither and die within days.
