    Consent

No means no. What’s so hard to get?

That is the basis of consent.

If someone says “no,” respect their wishes.

Do not force something that they do not permit.

If you are unsure, don’t hesitate to ask.

If they’re unconscious, do not be an ass.

If they’re unaware, try anything you should not dare.

Consent is a simple concept to grasp.

We learn it as children when we’re taught how to share.

    JAIME DAVID (host):
Hey everyone, welcome back to The Jaime David Podcast. I’m your host, Jaime David, and today’s topic is something that should be straightforward, obvious even—but still gets misunderstood, dismissed, and at times, outright ignored.

    We’re talking about consent.

This episode is short, simple, but powerful—just like the poem I wrote in 2020 that we’re going to talk about. The message is direct, and intentionally so. Because too often, consent is treated like a grey area when it isn’t. Let’s get into the poem first.

    It really is that simple.

No means no. And honestly, that should be the end of the conversation. But too many people treat consent like a negotiation, or like something that can be bypassed or excused.

And I want to pause here and really say something important: if someone is too afraid, too uncomfortable, or unable to say no—then it’s not yes. Consent isn’t silence. Consent isn’t compliance. Consent is clear, enthusiastic, and freely given.

I wrote this poem at a time when the world was grappling with the MeToo movement and countless stories of people—especially women, nonbinary folks, and children—sharing the pain of having their autonomy violated.

But this poem is not just about pain. It’s a reminder. A lesson. A call to do better.

It’s a reminder that we are all responsible for creating a culture of respect. A culture where boundaries are honored, and people feel safe being themselves.

And here’s something I believe to my core: if we can teach toddlers not to take toys from each other without asking, then adults have zero excuse when it comes to understanding consent.

So take this message seriously. Talk about it. Share it. Live it. And if you mess up—learn, apologize, and do better next time.

Consent is not complicated. It’s about dignity, respect, and basic human decency.

Thanks for joining me for this important conversation. Stay aware, stay compassionate, and as always, keep fighting for a better world. I’ll see you next time on The Jaime David Podcast.

    Intro:

Hey everyone, Jaime David here. Welcome to episode 20 of The Jaime David Podcast.

Today, I want to share a poem I wrote about something that’s become such an everyday part of life for most of us — the smartphone. It’s wild to think about how much these little devices shape the way we move through our day, connect with people, get information, and even take care of basic needs like food and transportation.

This poem, “A Day With A Smartphone,” is a simple story of a day in the life, seen through the lens of all the apps and conveniences that come with having a smartphone in your pocket.

    Background and Context:

When I wrote this poem, I was reflecting on how technology is woven so deeply into our routines. From ordering a ride to paying for lunch, from watching trailers to reading the news, smartphones are these incredible tools that can make life easier — but they also create a kind of constant digital buzz that can feel overwhelming.

I’m fascinated by how technology both connects us and distracts us. It’s a double-edged sword. This poem tries to capture that balance — the convenience, the speed, the instant access — while still feeling grounded in the real world, like stepping outside for a breath of fresh air.

It’s a snapshot of modern life and how intertwined we are with these devices.

    Poem Reading:

Here’s the poem “A Day With A Smartphone”:

    Called a cab. Missed it.
    That’s okay.
    Just use the Uber app.
Tell it where you’re going, and pay right away.

Five minutes later, the cab’s outside.
Get inside, and you’re on your way.

Get dropped off at McDonald’s. Meet with your friends.
Go to the counter, and pick up your order.
Show the cashier your phone screen and the purchase you made on the McD’s app.
Two minutes later, your food’s in your hand.
    How very convenient.

Sit down with your friends and chat about whatever.
Show them the latest Marvel movie trailer by searching it up on the YouTube.
Just then, you get a Twitter notification about whatever it was a celebrity had said.
You then get an update from the NY Times app about a recent speech The President has made.

Later on in the day, you’re ready to go home. You use Google Maps to find out where you are
And where the nearest train or bus stops are.
Once you find them, you decide to walk there, so that way you can enjoy a breath of fresh air.

You soon get to the train station, and you use the local train app to pay.
The gate is now open, and you can go through, so you do.

On the train, you debate what you want for dinner.
Since it will be a long way until you get home, you decide to order from GrubHub.
You schedule it to be delivered in an hour and a half, since the train ride takes an hour.

Once that’s out of the way, you decide to relax for the rest of the way.
You download some tunes from Spotify and enjoy the rest of your ride.

Once you’re home, your food is outside. You take it inside, eat it, and go to sleep for the night.
You set the alarm on your phone to wake you up in the morning.

    Reflection:

What this poem really shows me is how technology shapes not just what we do, but how we do it. The smartphone is more than a device — it’s a companion through the day, a portal to the world, a source of information and entertainment.

But it’s also a reminder to take moments like stepping outside for fresh air or chatting with friends in person — simple things that can sometimes get lost when we’re glued to screens.

So, this poem is both a nod to how amazing technology is and a gentle reminder to stay present in the moment, even when our phones make life so convenient.

    Closing:

Thanks for listening to episode 20 of The Jaime David Podcast. If you enjoyed this poem or have thoughts about how smartphones affect your day, hit me up. I’d love to hear from you.

I’m Jaime David. Take care of yourself, and I’ll catch you next time.
