    Birthdays and Anniversaries

Birthdays are supposed to be times of great happiness. They are occasions on which we celebrate another year of being alive. They’re joyous occasions, and can make feel very special. However, on the same day that someone is celebrating life, another person is mourning life lost. Most tragedies that happen in our lives won’t become national or even international news. They’ll only be remembered by a select few. Occasionally, tragedies make their way into the national and international headlines, and remain engrained in our hearts and minds for a long time. Sometimes, those impactful tragedies have occurred on our own birthdays. One example is the Tenerife disaster. It was one of the worst airplane disaster in history. Coincidentally, the anniversary of it is the same day as my birthday. What a weird coincidence. Knowing this makes my birthday feel very strange. I’m celebrating life on my birthday, while somewhere in the world, there are people out there who are mourning the lives lost on that tragic day. It is a strange feeling to feel, and it really puts life, and death, into perspective. We all are born into this world, and we will all one day leave this world, as well. It may happen when we’re young, when we’re old, or when we’re somewhere in the middle. It can happen any time, and on any day, even on our own birthdays. It is crazy to think about, but we have to remain positive and hope that nothing bad happens to us.

  • Birthday

    Birthday

So today is my birthday. Does not feel like much of a birthday today, though. With the whole coronavirus pandemic going on in the world, I have not been in much of a celebratory mood.

It really sucks, for I was looking forward to my birthday for a while. Back in January, before things got as bad as they did with coronavirus, I was looking forward to hanging out with friends on my birthday. I wanted to grab a bite to eat with them. I was thinking about trying “Beyond Sushi” in the city with them. It was a vegan sushi restaurant, and I wanted to try something new and different. I was also thinking about going to Gamestop to buy a new game, or possibly going to a book store to get some books for myself. There was so much I was thinking about doing for my birthday both with friends and for myself.

Things did not turn out that way, however. Currently, the world is dealing with a pandemic, and in the US, the cases are skyrocketing. It’s pretty serious. It is really depressing, too. It is really depressing to hear about all of this shit going on. I want things to get better. I hope they get better. I know at some point, this virus will subside, but what will be the result? Who even knows?

All I do know is that I will try to make the best of the situation. I still have books. I still have music. I still have movies. I still have YouTube. I still have the Internet. I still have family. I still have friends. I still have my health. I will try to keep in touch with my friends and family for as long as I can, and I will try to stay as healthy as I can for as long as I can. I hope I don’t wind up getting sick. I do not want to get sick, and I do not want to get other people sick. Nobody knows what will happen days, weeks, or months from now, but what is for certain is that we have to try to remain positive, take precautions, social distance as much as possible, and if we are still working, hold onto our jobs for as long as possible. We have to take things one day at a time and see what happens.

  • Thematic Discussion of Daniela Elana’s “Volatile”

Thematic Discussion of Daniela Elana’s “Volatile”

This post is going to be something different. I’ve had the idea in my mind for a while. I’d like to discuss some the themes and symbols in my friend Daniela Elana’s book “Volatile,” and share my thoughts. Hope you enjoy. Oh and spoiler alert, if you have not read the book “Volatile,” there will be plot spoilers in this post, so be forewarned! Without further ado, let’s begin.

    Theme of Betrayal

Betrayal is a pertinent theme that appears throughout Volatile. Maricel first gets betrayed by the guy she meets on the bus who turned out to be a creep. Later on, she feels betrayed by celebrities that she idolized and looked up to when one of them assaults her and later insults her. Later on in the novel, Maricel gets betrayed by her deadbeat dad who comes into her life out of the blue. The two start to develop a connection, until it was later revealed to Maricel that her dad only wanted to connect for her money. She felt betrayed by that. Towards the climax of the novel, Marciel gets betrayed by her lover Claudius, who was revealed to have lied about everything regarding who he was, including his name. Maricel is forced to work together with a few of the enslaved denizens in the secret society of Lemuria, only to be betrayed yet again by one of the allies that she had previously worked with once all of them were out of the fray. Betrayal is a prevalent theme in Volatile, and the lessons that can be learned can be applied to the real world. Sometimes, you don’t know who you can trust, because people whom you could know really well could have the worst of intentions. The only person you can trust is yourself, but even then, not fully, which was the case when Maricel took possession of the crystal skull. She had lost control of herself and became someone she was not; something she was not. Similarly, strong emotions, whether they are positive or negative, can make us act in ways that we wouldn’t normally act. Same thing with substances. We have the potential to act in ways we wouldn’t normally act. If one is not careful, it is possible to lose one’s self. It is possible to act irrational and become someone you’re not. It is possible to do things you would normally not do. In short, you have to be skeptical of people, and try not to act in ways that can hurt yourself or others. Don’t be too skeptical, though. By acting too skeptical of things, it is possible to turn away the people who care about the most, causing them to feel betrayed. This was the case when Maricel pushed her friends and family away after they warned her about who Claudius really was. By the time she found out for herself who he really was, it was too late. So, to summarize, be skeptical, but not too skeptical, be cautious, but not too cautious, be open to listen to people’s concerns, even if you may not believe it 100 percent, try to act in ways that don’t hurt yourself or others, and lastly, try not to push people away, because you might wind up pushing away the people who care about you the most.

    Theme of Change

Throughout the novel, Maricel evolves as a character. She starts out as a country gal that no one really knew. As time goes on, she becomes a famous actress who everybody knows. By the end of the novel, she loses all of that fame and becomes a nobody once again. Not only that, but her character also changes in the way she acts. At the start of the novel, she’s passive about a lot of things. By the end of the novel, she becomes a strong and independent character who doesn’t take crap from anyone else. In a way, she goes from being a follower to becoming a leader.

Similarly, her relationship with Claudius changes. In the beginning, he starts off as an elusive character with a mysterious backstory. As Maricel finds out more about Claudius, their relationship changes. It goes from joyful to annoying to abusive to a full-blown nightmare. In the end, she is able to escape him, but at the cost of losing everything and everyone she loved.

    Individualism vs Conformity

Throughout the novel, the themes of individuality and conformity clash in dynamic and ironic ways. Maricel’s character is the embodiment of individuality. She constantly makes her own choices, which a lot of the time go against what others expect of her. When her friends and family warned her of Claudius, she decided to stay with him despite what they said to her. When she was brought to Lemuria, she was expected to act like a queen, but she didn’t. She did what she wanted to do. Eventually, she turned on the order itself and found a way to escape. She had help, but ultimately, she made it out alone. From the beginning of the novel all the way to the end, Maricel did things her way.

Claudius embodies both conformity and individuality. He was imprisoned by God, but eventually made his way out. Once he did, he and a group of other angels turned on God and formed their own society. In this sense, they were individualists because they did things their own way. They didn’t go along with what God and the other angels expected of them. That is how Claudius embodies individuality. On the flipside, he also embodies conformity. Sometime after forming a secret society, Claudius became a tyrant and ruled over the society with an iron fist. He oppressed the citizens of Lemuria and forced them to conform with his vision. If they didn’t, there’d be dire consequences for them.

    Symbolism of Fire

Fire is a major symbol for “Volatile,” and the rest of the “Through the Fire” series. The relationship of Claudius and Maricel is described as “volatile.” In chemistry, volatility relates to vapor pressures and boiling points for liquids or solids. If the vapor pressure is high, volatility is high. If the boiling point, volatility is low. This is because gases are the most unstable form of matter. Usually, a substance’s volatility is recorded at room temperature. If a substance evaporates (for liquids) or sublimates (for solids) at room temperature, that means that for that specific substance, room temperature was a very high temperature for it. In layman’s terms, room temperature is considered “hot” for volatile substances that evaporate or sublimate at room temperature.

Fire itself burns at high temperatures. It is a very destructive force. It can end lives, burn homes, and destroy ecosystems. If fire is not contained and controlled, it can quickly go out of control and burn everything in its path.

Love is usually compared to fire or flames. This is because love, just like fire, can burn uncontrollably if it is not contained or controlled. Similarly, other emotions, especially anger, are like fire as well. If they are not controlled or contained, they can go out of control like a wildfire.

Fire, for the most part, is bad. It is bad if it goes out of control. However, there are some good qualities about fire. Firstly, fire can be a light source. It can light up the darkness that surrounds. A person with a strong, positive personality can have a similar effect, as well. If there is sadness and negativity in a person’s life, a positive person could sometimes brighten up that person’s life, even if it is in a small or brief way. Positive people can also find a way to bring joy into the lives of those they meet, whether it’s friends, family, lovers, or even strangers. Just by being who they are as people, they are able to make people’s lives better.

Fire can also provide warmth for people. In the frigid, cold months, or in environments with extreme cold, fire can help provide some warmth for people. Heat is able to radiate out of the flames and can warm a person’s external and internal body temperature. Similarly, someone who is a loving individual can give people feelings of warmth and comfort in the ways they speak and act. They can show uplifting emotional support when needed, and are caring and affectionate individuals.

Lastly, fire has a rejuvenating effect. Once it destroys an ecosystem, it has the potential to allow new ecosystems to thrive. It provides new organisms with homes and shelter, it allows plants and seedlings to grow and thrive, and it enriches the soil by providing it with nutrients! Similarly, when love fails, it makes way for something new. It allows people to find out who they truly are, and it allows people to better themselves as individuals, and it gives them a chance to find a way to tame the flame that they have within them. It allows one to grow, learn, and thrive! It allows one to enrich their lives with whatever it is they enjoy the most and it allows people to figure out what it is they want from love. It allows people to figure out what they want and how they want to be. The ending of love is not an ending; it’s a beginning. It’s the beginning of something new; something better. It’s the beginning of something that is better than anything that came before! That is what love is, and that is how love can make us grow, even when it ends! Sure, love may be volatile, but it’s volatility can bring about change that is needed for people to grow!

    Closing Thoughts

There are many more themes and symbols in “Volatile” that I could discuss, but for now, I think I’ve written enough. I don’t want this post to get too long, after all! I just wanted to highlight some themes and symbols that I found interesting! I hope you all enjoyed! While you’re at it, feel free to check out my friend Daniela Elana’s blog. It has a lot of great work on there! Take care, everyone! I plan on making more literary discussions like this, not only of my friend’s other books, but also other works that I find interesting, as well, whether it’s movies, TV shows, video games, books from other authors, YouTube videos, music, art, poems, short stories, etc. Anyways, that’s all for now!

Careless CRISPR – Parody of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”

These are lyrics for a song parody of “Careless Whisper” by George Michael called “Careless CRISPR,” which is about CRISPR technology, and the potential downsides to using it. The idea came from YouTuber penguinz0. Here is the link to his channel:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq6VFHwMzcMXbuKyG7SQYIg

And here is the video where I got the idea for “Careless CRISPR.”

Without further, ado, here are the lyrics for this parody. And if anyone with musical talent wants to use these lyrics for making a parody song using my lyrics, feel free to!

    What is the answer?

Should I delete this pair to try and cure your cancer?

    If I don’t you’ll die.

    If I do, it might

    Cause an unintended consequence

If I remove that gene sequence.

You could have a deformed head.

Guilt will eat me from the inside.

    If you wind up suffering,

    I will be a fool.

Should I go ahead and let you die

Knowing I could have done something?

    You’re predisposed to this condition.

    I could edit you!

    Science can never mend

The careless CRISPRs of a parent.

    Your future’s in my mind.

    If I’m ignorant, I might

    Cause discomfort inside you.

Pain will be in your life.

You could be born with no legs.

Guilt will eat me from the inside.

    If you wind up suffering,

    I will be a fool.

Should I go and try to save your life

Knowing that I can now do something?

    Your genetics, I could mend.

    I could edit you!

    Maybe I shouldn’t, though.

Tonight my thoughts are raging loud!

This debate has left me bound.

I could choose to go one way

And remove the sequence that can cause you pain.

If I do that, it could cure your cancer

    Or you’ll have no ambulation.

    I cannot decide today!

    Forgive me!

You could be born without a brain.

Guilt will eat me from the inside.

    If you wind up suffering,

    I will be a fool.

Should I go ahead and let you die

Knowing I could save you right now?

    Your genetics, I could mend.

    I could edit you!

    Now you are grown!

(Now you are grown) Was I in the wrong, the wrong?

Did I make the right choice?

  • A Day With A Smartphone

    A Day With A Smartphone

    Called a cab. Missed it.

    That’s okay.

    Just use the Uber app.

Tell it where you’re going, and pay right away.

Five minutes later, the cab’s outside.

Get inside, and you’re on your way.

Get dropped off at McDonald’s. Meet with your friends.

Go to the counter, and pick up your order.

Show the cashier your phone screen and the purchase you made on the McD’s app.

Two minutes later, your food’s in your hand.

    How very convenient.

Sit down with your friends and chat about whatever.

Show them the latest Marvel movie trailer by searching it up on the YouTube.

Just then, you get a Twitter notification about whatever it was a celebrity had said.

You then get an update from the NY Times app about a recent speech The President has made.

Later on in the day, you’re ready to go home. You use Google Maps to find out where you are

And where the nearest train or bus stops are.

Once you find them, you decide to walk there, so that way you can enjoy a breath of fresh air.

You soon get to the train station, and you use the local train app to pay.

The gate is now open, and you can go through, so you do.

On the train, you debate what you want for dinner.

Since it will be a long way until you get home, you decide to order from GrubHub.

You schedule it to be delivered in an hour and a half, since the train ride takes an hour.

Once that’s out of the way, you decide to relax for the rest of the way.

You download some tunes from Spotify and enjoy the rest of your ride.

Once you’re home, your food is outside. You take it inside, eat it, and go to sleep for the night.

You set the alarm on your phone to wake you up in the morning.

  • “Blue October – Oh My My” Review

“Blue October – Oh My My” Review

The band Blue October had recently released their newest single. It is titled “Oh My My.” As soon as I heard it, the song was very upbeat and uplifting. The lyrics are also very relatable. The song is about an extroverted guy who falls for an introverted woman. This song is very relatable to me, because the two times I’ve fallen in love, it was with women who were introverts. I don’t know why, but I always find myself falling for introverts. I can’t quite explain why that is. Maybe it’s because I find introverts to be very caring, loyal, compassionate, and understanding. I’m not sure. All I know is that I, as an extrovert, feel like myself the most around introverted individuals.

  • Death

    Death

Death is a part of life.

    It causes us great strife.

It takes away our loved ones

    And leaves us all alone.

    It affects us all differently,

For we have different ways that we grieve,

But I know that I personally believe

That death is the end; the end of everything.

Once someone’s gone, they’re gone for good.

Maybe there’s a God and an afterlife. Who knows?

All I do know is that I will always try

To bring happiness and joy to the people in my life.

I will try to make the world great in the best way that I can

By using the gifts and talents that make me who I am.

I may not be perfect; not in the slightest

But I strive to be a light; a light that shines brightest

When I’m surrounded by those who are caring and supportive.

I don’t like to see people in pain,

    Either physically or emotionally.

Their pain is something that I want to take away,

    But I know I can’t do that,

    For I’m not superhuman.

    I’m only a man; a man with a plan;

A plan to see this world be the best world that it can.

How it will be done, I honestly don’t know.

What I do know is that I’ll be a light that glows.

I care about people; always have and always will.

That’ll never change; at least, I don’t think it will.

I strive to be better; to be different.

I want to learn from my own failures, shortcomings, and mistakes.

I want to be someone that people would want to meet.

I want to be someone that people could appreciate.

Even though I don’t expect anything in return,

I will do anything I can to bring joy to this world,

So that if I die tomorrow, I’ll be proud of all I’ve done.

I don’t know what will happen to me when I die.

All I know is, I’m going to appreciate life and just take things one day at a time.

  • The Dome

    The Dome

    Background

I initially wrote this poem in hopes to possibly have it included in a book about climate relocation. It unfortunately wasn’t accepted, so I’m sharing it on here!

Before I get to the poem itself, let me tell you about the background of what inspired and led me to write the poem in the first place, for the story is a pretty interesting one. It all started about a month ago. I wss browsing YouTube and decided to watch a video from YouTube user DarkDocs titled “Is America’s Own Chernobyl Sitting In The Middle of the Ocean.”

In the video, he describes the history of the Runit Dome and the effects it could have on the environment today.

After the video was over, I watched in the suggestions tab titled “This Concrete Dome Holds A Leaking Toxic Timebomb | Foriegn Correspondent.”

It was a video by ABC News In-depth. In the video, it talks about the history of the Runit Dome and how it is affecting the Marshallese people presently. One of the people who was mentioned in the video was Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, a poet from the Marshall Islands. In 2014, she had read a poem for her daughter in front of the UN for the Climate Summit. I thought her poem was very inspiring, so I wanted to follow her on social media to check out more of her work. I followed her on Facebook and Twitter. On her Twitter, I saw that she had shared an advertisement for a book that two climate scientists were working on getting published. The book would be a collection of works ranging from scientific articles to poems. I decided to submit a poem. I had sent a short excerpt of it to them. They said they liked it and that I should hear back a month later if my poem will be accepted or not. Fast forward to today, and I found out my poem was not accepted. However, they said they enjoyed the excerpt that I had sent to them, and that there were a lot of submissions to choose from. I wish the both of them good luck in getting the book published, and without further ado, here is the full poem that I had wrote!

    The Poem

    Bikini Atoll;

    They were told

    The US were protectors

    Of hope

    And of freedom.

    Instead, they were relo-

    -cated from their homes

    While their atolls

    Were bombarded with radiation,

    Which had took a toll

    On them and their souls,

And the remains of it all

    Were buried underneath a dome

    That is called “The Tomb.”

How ironic it’s name is, so,

    Because the Runit Dome

    Has the potential

    To become their own tombs.

    With sea level rising,

    It’s becoming a crisis

That if the radiation finds its

    Way out, it could

    Completely poison

    The entire Earth’s oceans,

And this is because of the

    Changing Earth’s climate!

Is there any hope for us to survive this

Disastrous threat that could possibly annihilate us?

I’d say there is, but we need to realize this:

    For us to survive it,

We all need to rise up and

Take a stand for what’s right, which

    Is saving the entire planet

    From total destruction.

It may sound bleak; it may sound alarmist,

But I believe we all can grow and thrive despite this!

That is why I, a mere man who writes this,

An artist with a creative mind that is

Concerned about the state of the world and this climactic climate crisis,

Had decided to sit down and take the time to write this.

    I wrote this poem

Because I care about my home.

I care about the loved ones that I call my own.

I wrote this for my friends; my family, too!

I wrote this for their friends, and their families, too!

    I wrote this for everyone; everyone that’s in the room;

    The room that is so big and so round and so blue;

    The room that has oceans that spans millions of miles;

    The room that has a diversity of creatures both on land and in the sea;

    The room that has been around for billions of years;

    The room that houses a species that has accomplished many great feats, but has also caused a myriad of tragedies that led countless people to defeat;

The room that I’m proud to call planet Earth.

I was not asked to be born on this Earth,

But it is my place; the place of my birth.

It sorta just happened; one day I was conceived.

I grew to a fetus, then a baby, and then eventually an adult human being.

It was a slow process; just like humanity’s growth on this Earth for thousands of years.

We started out in caves, and eventually made great things.

Along the way, we also had created

Devastating weapons that can harm us and hurt us in many ways.

The same goes with climate change; it’s mostly man-made.

It is a mess that we ourselves had made.

The consequences are dire; the Earth is on fire.

But if we take a stand now, I believe we’ll survive this!

The Earth is our home; it is our dome.

It is the one thing that should come above all!

    Just as the dome

    Located in the Enewetak Atoll

    Has the potential

    To destroy us all,

    We too have the potential;

    The potential to be saviors

For not just the here and now,

    But for future generations.

That is why I had wrote this poem.

So if you see this message, please heed the urgency

To do something about this climactic climate emergency

    That could lead to insurgency

    Of disastrous natural convergency

    That could inadvertently lead

    To extreme diathermancy

    And create great divergency.

We must fight this looming threat, and we must do so with great fervency,

For it is this Earth that we love with great ardency!

We must stand up and fight, and must do so without errancy.

We must not treat this threat as a mere nonemergency.

We must respect this planet with great amounts of conservancy,

And clean up this world with great levels of detergency.

This our home; the home that we were grown.

This Earth is our dome, and this is its poem!
