This might make me sound like a Scrooge myself, but fuck it. Enough with the Scrooge movies!
Seriously. For the love of God, how many different adaptations of A Christmas Carol do we actually need?
It feels like every few years, somebody decides that we need yet another Scrooge movie. And what’s even more frustrating? They keep telling the SAME DAMN STORY!
Yes, we get it. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserable, greedy old man who hates Christmas. Three ghosts visit him, show him the past, present, and future, and teach him the importance of being a better person.
Great story. A classic, even. Charles Dickens deserves credit for creating something that’s endured for generations.
BUT COME ON!
At some point, can we please do something DIFFERENT with this character?
If you’re going to make another Scrooge movie, then at least get creative with it! Don’t just give us the same story again with a different actor playing Scrooge.
Here’s an idea: How about a time-travel action-adventure movie where Scrooge actually has to travel through time and save the past in order to save the future?
Or how about a paranormal adventure where Scrooge becomes some sort of ghost hunter? Maybe he has to investigate supernatural occurrences, confront dangerous spirits, and deal with things that go well beyond the three ghosts he’s already familiar with.
Hell, I don’t know! I’m just throwing ideas out there!
The point is, there’s plenty of room to do something interesting with the concept. You could take the character, the world, or even the general premise of A Christmas Carol and turn it into something completely different.
And before anyone says it, I’m not saying people should stop adapting classic literature. I’m not even saying A Christmas Carol is a bad story. Far from it.
I’m saying that constantly retelling the exact same story, over and over again, isn’t particularly exciting.
Hollywood, studios, filmmakers, whoever is responsible for this endless parade of Scrooge adaptations: PLEASE, GIVE IT A REST!
If you’re going to bring Scrooge back to the big screen, at least give us something we haven’t seen a dozen times already.
Because honestly? I’m getting tired of being visited by the same three ghosts every damn Christmas.
Enough is enough!
