Hey everyone, Jaime David here. Welcome to episode 21 of The Jaime David Podcast.

Today’s episode tackles a very serious and urgent topic: how words, especially from those in power, can have dangerous consequences.

This episode was inspired by a poem I wrote in response to a moment early in the COVID-19 pandemic when misinformation about disinfectants being a cure spread rapidly — misinformation that could literally kill people.

Background and Context:

In April 2020, during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis, we were all desperate for solutions, for hope. But misinformation was spreading just as fast as the virus.

A particularly alarming moment was when the President suggested injecting disinfectants might cure the disease. This was not only false but extremely dangerous.

My poem, “Words Have Power,” was my way of speaking out against that kind of reckless speech, emphasizing the real physical harm it could cause.

This poem was important to me because it highlights the crucial responsibility leaders have when they speak publicly, especially in a crisis.

Words can save lives — or end them.

Poem Reading:

Here’s the poem “Words Have Power”:

Trump had said
That if you inject
Disinfect-
-ants into your veins,

That it will cure COVID-19.

That is dangerous.
That is stupid.
Doing that will kill you.
It is very lethal.

Disinfectants are meant
To be used on surfaces.
You must use them as directed.
If you don’t, you can wind up dead.

Don’t try it at home, folks.
You’ll need to go the hospital.
It won’t be fun.

If you inject chemicals into your lungs,
You can develop stridor.
You’ll be gasping for air
As the chemicals corrode your
Respiratory system.

It will be very painful.
The lining will peel off.
It is not something you’d want to experience.

Reflection:

This poem is a stark reminder: words have real power.

Misinformation — especially when it comes from high-profile figures — can cost lives.

During the pandemic, we saw how deadly false claims and unsafe advice spread, sometimes encouraged by leaders who either didn’t know better or didn’t care enough.

Public trust and clear, truthful communication are essential in crises.

It’s vital that we all question information critically and listen to experts.

And as a society, we must hold leaders accountable for the impact of their words.
